#8 Epigenetics, Space, and Ikebana

Affirmation for Transformation: “I am mindful of the filters that limit my ability to create.”

At the heart of my coaching practice is a marriage between science and spirituality. We can often discover the filters, beliefs, and blocks to transformation just by looking at how epigenetics show up in our lives.  Briefly, epigenetics is the science behind what makes us who we are. It is our thoughts, words, what we drink, eat and how our environment supports us. Science says that epigenetics represents 95% of who we are and our genetics represents 5%. The energy of things and people in our environment have a profound effect on us. Since we are all connected, the people in our environment can affect how we feel.

Just like the clutter in our minds our personal space, our environment, in our homes and offices play a particularly important role in our level of happiness, wellness, productivity and ability to manifest our desires. Feng Shui is one way we can position objects and color in our space, to create supportive energy.

To explain the importance of space I’d like to share with you one of my passions. I love the art of creative floral design for fun, entries for judging at flower shows, to share, and teach to others. One of my favorite creative floral designs is Ikebana.

Ikebana is a form of Japanese floral design. The most important element is space, in addition to form and the three main elements: heaven, earth and man. The Japanese perception of beauty is largely based on space, especially space as it is found in nature. Once you understand this, Japanese art and design begin to make sense. Space is the central component of design. One who practices Ikebana sees space not as something to fill in or use up, but rather as an element to be created and preserved. Proper use of space allows for positive elements!

A form of space seen in Japanese art forms, such as gardens and Ikebana is Ma. Ma means empty, spatial void, an interval in space and time. The emptiness is the focal point! Ma allows for energy. Ma can show itself in music in the form of silence or pauses. Ma allows for harmony and balance.  Ma or Space forms harmonious relationships and lack of space leads to clutter and disharmony! This concept of space can also be applied to our own personal environment.

If we stockpile stuff, making our homes and offices cluttered, it most likely will reveal two mindsets: I’m not enough and/or I don’t have enough.

If your belief is you don’t have enough, you may gather things to protect yourself. You may have a deep seeded belief that you are protecting yourself from hard times. Have you heard about the Great Depression? You may compare yourself to others. You want bigger homes, larger garages, stuffed so full you can’t park your cars in them. Clutter takes up all the space, keeping us stuck, and not allowing the Space, for new energy, and new things, to manifest in our lives.

Have you created an environment that doesn’t allow new energy to come in?

If our belief is not enough, we may gather things, to fill the void, of what is deeply missing, in our lives. We may buy things to make us feel good.  Buying special things, better things, more things, and they stay in the closet, jewelry box, or drawer. Some may still be hanging in the closet, with the price tag, a year later. Some clothes may stay in the jewelry box because the time is never special enough, it’s too nice, or we forget about them.  They are promises of someday when… I’ll use it when… I’ll wear it when… Someday when… isn’t coming!

How can you create more space in your environment?

Donate or sell everything you don’t use. Buy only things you need and will use. See yourself as someone who only buys what they use. Make your space special to you and see the blessings in what you already have. You are enough! Today is a gift you never know what tomorrow will bring.  Someday may never come. What’s on the inside matters. Today is the day to enjoy space. Create space for more joy in your life.

When we declutter our lives, we allow the space for new energy to come in, and we live more in the present moment!  Space encourages creativity.  Learn to see space. Learn to create space. Space allows other elements to breathe, to move and connect. Empty space is a powerful amplifier, helping to create a whole that is more engaging than the sum of individual parts.  Acknowledge your space and know the you-niverse is partnered with you at this time and in all time. Space allows freedom for growth and transformation!
